Condition Training for Racing Pigeons
// ]]>
Being in tip top shape is pivotal when it comes to race time. In order for your pigeons to withstand the rough elements of some races and of course being able to win races your pigeons diet and exercise will be the determining factors. The best way for your bird being young or old to get in shape is by distance training.
Your younger birds will be able to increase their endurance even though it will take them longer to get comfortable with the distance. This is expected and their times will improve as the distance increases. A good starting ground for your birds is about 2 to 3 miles. This distance isn’t far but challenging enough to test the shape and condition.
Another great benefit it allows the younger pigeons to get a feel of training and racing. Once they completed the distance a couple of times increase it to 5 miles. After a couple of good attempts with this mile distance increase it to 10 miles and then 15. At these distances you may want to do these distances at least 5 times before increasing the distance.
Only do this once per day no more. Once you reached the level of 15 miles increase to 20 miles then 40 and then 60. Once you are at these distances it is usually a good idea to have 1 or 2 rest days in between.
