When it comes to racing pigeons the question asked is at what age could I start racing my pigeons? Many question Should I be racing pigeons when they are only a few months old? The answer is an empahtically YES! Young pigeons are ready to start racing after only 3 or 4 months old.
You will be suprised they can fly fairly long distances as well. As a rule of thumb I would only allow them 300-400 km. That amount is good for a start. Also there is no objections if you’re want to race shorter distances if you feel that is too much.
The key is to race them before they are too sexually mature. In my experience 4 months is an ideal training age but this will depend on diet and training regimen. The Darkening System is excellent for young pigeons. By using the Darkening System it will cause them to moult their body feathers, but keep their flight feathers. You will also find your pigeons will increase their flying ability and it will help them win races as well.
Once your pigeons develop their new feathers, it is time to do some serious work . At this point they can handle a lot of training . Excess is not good in any training measure so be sure to not go to far. But you will be suprised they enjoy trainining for large amounts of time during this stage.
Your training schedule can vary, depending on duration and frequency of your training. Perhaps one day you may want to do large amounts of training then rest a day and then the next day do a small excerisize session. Or you may try something more consistent that is almost everyday, but with less amounts of training. The key here is to find something that fits well with you and your pigeons.
An important thing to remember if your using the Darkening System, you do not want to train them until they have their feathers. It won’t work well in your favour. This does not mean you should not excersize them. You should try once or twice a day that would be sufficient for exercise, and your feeding schedule should match suit. But agan this is my opinion and what I have found works .
Racing young birds, is fun, and very exciting as you will come to find out.
